UAE court upholds life sentence for Emirati found guilty of joining terrorist group

A woman was also sentenced to 10 years in prison for pledging allegiance to Daesh

The UAE’s Federal Appeal Court on Wednesday upheld the life sentence for a 29-year-old Emirati found guilty of joining a terrorist organisation and travelling abroad with the intention of fighting alongside it, according to state news agency WAM.

The court also sentenced an Emirati woman to 10 years in jail and ordered the confiscation of items seized from her residence after she was found guilty of joining terrorist group Daesh.

The woman posted a pledge of allegiance to Daesh leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi online and posted articles and information promoting terrorist ideologies, WAM said.

Her sister was acquitted of all charges.

Three other young Emiratis in interior ministry rehabilitation and advice centres were placed on probation and prohibited from travelling for six months.
