The UAE emirate of Sharjah’s Healthcare City Authority has given Abu Dhabi-based Ahalia Group permission to establish a $100m hospital.

The 120-bed facility will be the first within Sharjah Healthcare City and have a footprint of 50,000sqm.

Ahalia Groups of Hospitals managing director Dr V.S Gopal said the company planned to begin construction of the hospital by the end of the year.

The authority said investor interest and plans for a number of other hospitals had encouraged it to double the zone’s area from 24 million sqm to 4.8 million.

Construction of Sharjah Healthcare City will be completed in phases with work on a clinical building and healthcare offices spanning 10,000sqm to start after the summer.

A medical logistics zone is also planned to transport medical and pharmaceutical supplies due to the site’s proximity to Sharjah International Airport.

Last week, Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) signed a memorandum of understanding with REI Holding Group and Haewon Medical Foundation Sejong General Hospital to establish the first Korean hospital in Sharjah.

The facility will debut the latest Korean healthcare technology and specialise in open-heart surgery, cardiac care and medical expertise.
