A new 5,780 square meter Carrefour hypermarket has opened at Dubai’s BurJuman shopping mall, becoming the first store to open for business in the mall’s remodeled North Wing.

The new hypermarket, with its spread of fresh food products and consumer durables, aims to cater to the residential neighbourhoods of Bur Dubai and Karama, a statement from BurJuman said.

“The opening of Carrefour marks the beginning of a new chapter for BurJuman, which is in the midst of an exciting phase in its development,” said Leigh Regan, COO at BurJuman.

“Carrefour will serve as a key anchor tenant for the mall and is expected to be a high-traffic addition to our retail mix, reinforcing our position as a key player in Dubai’s retail and entertainment scene,” he added.

Work on the mall’s renovation began more than a year ago with plans to add a 14 screen VOX Cinemas complex and a new larger food court, in addition to the new hypermarket.

Amongst the upgrades, one of the mall’s main exterior entrances will also be completely redesigned and an al fresco dining area will be added at the ground level.

The renovated section of the mall will offer both large format and boutique-style stores from new and existing tenants, said the statement. Once completed, BurJuman’s total retail area will increase to one million square ft from the current 800,000 square ft.

The expansion comes amidst rapid growth in the UAE’s retail sector, which is projected to reach Dhs151 billion by 2015, aided by rising population and high disposable incomes.

Other mall in the country, such as Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Mall are also undertaking expansion projects to meet rising demand.
