Etihad Airways has signed a three-year deal with Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) to support sports activities and major events in the UAE capital.

The agreement replaces an event-by-event approach adopted by the carrier previously and will cover at least 15 events.

These will include January’s annual Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, October’s Abu Dhabi Tour cycling race, the FINA 10k Open Water World Championship, the FINA High-Dive World Cup, Emirates Football Forum and the FIBA Basketball 3 x 3 World Championship.

“This agreement cements our work together to promote Abu Dhabi as an outstanding destination for major international sporting events. These events bring considerable economic benefits, provide excellent opportunities for resident and visiting sports fans and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle,” said Etihad Airways SVP of corporate and international affairs Hareb Almuhairy.

ADSC general secretary Aref Al Awani said the deal would contribute to Abu Dhabi’s vision of becoming an international destination for sport, competitiveness and international events.

Under the plans, Etihad will use its marketing channels to promote major events in Abu Dhabi and will also be able to offer special athlete appearances, guest experiences and community engagement activities.

The carrier’s cargo operation will also help in transporting sports equipment to and from Abu Dhabi.

Etihad is currently a major sponsor of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Formula One race and several major sporting teams including English Premier League side Manchester City and Saudi football club Al Ittihad.
