Emaar Retail, a subsidiary of Dubai developer Emaar, has announced plans to open and manage a 10-screen Reel Cinemas complex at The Beach, a new mall being developed by Meraas Holding in Dubai Marina.
The agreement follows the announcement of a recent joint venture by Emaar Properties and Meraas Holding to develop Dubai Hills Estate, the first phase of the Mohammed Bin Rashid City (MBR City).
The cinema at ‘The Beach’, which is located at Dubai Marina shoreline, can host over 800 people, and will feature three Platinum Movie Suites, a Platinum Lounge with a dedicated kitchen and seven standard screens, Emaar said in a statement.
Reel Cinemas has a 22-screen megaplex at The Dubai Mall and a boutique cineplex at Dubai Marina Mall, featuring six screens.
The entertainment arm of Emaar Retail has recorded a footfall of nine million visitors since its launch in 2009.
The 22-screen megaplex at The Dubai Mall received over 2.6 million visitors in 2013 marking a 25 per cent growth in audience turnout compared to 2012. The six-screen cineplex at Dubai Marina Mall recorded 325,000 visitors in 2013.
Reel Cinemas also enjoys around 22 per cent of the market share among cinemas, Emaar Retail’s chief executive officer Maitha Al Dossari said in an earlier statement.
UAE’s cineplexes have been growing steadily with most of them expanding their offerings.
Grand Cinemas has been on an aggressive regional expansion drive throughout 2013 and has announced plans to launch four new theatres within the GCC this year. The new screens will be located in Abu Dhabi’s World Trade Centre and Dubai’s Dragon Mart along with cinemas in The Pearl- Doha and Muharraq Mall in Bahrain.
Vox Cinemas, part of the Dubai-based conglomerate Majid Al Futtaim Ventures, recently announced the launch of a 14-screen megaplex in the Bur Juman shopping mall, which is set to open in 2014.
The group also launched the Middle East’s first 4DX enabled sensory cinemas earlier this year in Dubai’s Mirdif City Centre and Deira City Centre.
