Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a new scheme allowing tenants to use public parking near their home free of charge.

What’s On reports that special parking permits are now available for citizens who live within 500m of public parking areas featuring the authority’s orange signs.

The process is free and can be undertaken at an RTA service centre, the authority tweeted on April 16.

Applicants must present a copy of their passport or Emirates ID, valid property ownership or tenancy documentation and valid vehicle ownership documentation in the name of the owner or tenant.

Once issued, the permit card allows the applicant as many parking spaces as rooms in the property up to a maximum of four.

The new service follows the introduction of paid parking in a number of areas where it was previously free like Jumeirah Lake Towers.
