Initiative could eventually be rolled out across the emirate

ADNOC Distribution has announced the beginning of a seven-month pilot for smart self-service refuelling stations in the UAE capital.

The initiative marks a shift in refuelling habits in the region, where drivers generally rely on attendants to refill their vehicles.

The pilot will take place from March 1 to October 1 2016 and cover four service stations on Abu Dhabi island.

Customers who register for an ADNOC Wallet account will be able to pay for their purchases at the stations via a smart chip in their vehicle’s fuel tank, a special card or via their Emirates ID. The ADNOC Wallet-linked payment methods will be manageable via both mobile and tablet.

The company said the initiative would reduce queues and wait times at its service stations.

“ADNOC Smart service allows customers to benefit from our cutting-edge technologically advanced infrastructure to experience self-refuelling in a fast, easy and safe environment when they visit one of our smart service stations,” said ADNOC Distribution CEO Abdulla Salem Al Dhaheri.

“We will monitor and evaluate the pilot phase of ADNOC Smart and the customer’s actual experience throughout the implementation of this pilot phase. Based on the outcomes, we hope to expand the service, after carrying out improvements if needed, across our network of service stations in the emirate of Abu Dhabi.”

ADNOC said it would provide incentives to use the service during the pilot phase including offering smart tags for free to the first 5,000 customers and free ADNOC Plus cards and ID activation for payment.

The service will be available at Rabdan Service Station located in Al Mushrif area on Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street – Abu Dhabi Road, Al Nasr Service Station located on Sheikh Zayed the First Street, Al Zafarana Service Station located near Khalifa University and Al Qanah Service Station located on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street.

Customers will also be able to locate the stations via the ADNOC smart application.

Six smart centres will also be opened for registration during the pilot at Al Dhafrah service station, Global Centre (Daman Building), Abu Dhabi City Municipality Centre, ADNOC Distribution Headquarters main lobby and Rabdan service station.

Smart tag installation will take place at the Rabdan service station.
